Stay Motivated When Nobody Is Clapping

Jun 16, 2025

What's one action you can put in place to shift from external motivation to internal?

Let’s be real. It’s easy to stay motivated when the likes are pouring in, the comments are cheering you on, and people are saying, “You’re crushing it.” But what about when they’re not? What about those quiet seasons of your life and business when the effort is there… but the applause aren't? That’s the moment most people quit, but that’s the moment with the largest growth potential. If you’re building something meaningful, there will inevitably be stretches where no one notices. But the truth is, you don’t need a standing ovation to be great.  Here's 4 BIG ideas to stay fired up when there are no cheers.

 1. Create Your Own Applause Ritual

If you’re waiting on someone to validate your efforts, then you’ve already given away your power. Instead, at the end of each day, put a routine in place where you ask yourself:

  • What did I do today that moved the needle one step closer to my dream?

  • Where did I show up today, even when it was hard?

  • What am I most proud of accomplishing today?

Write it down and internalize it.  Make it part of who you are.  Most of us internalize our failures, but forget to do the same with our wins. You’re building a self-acknowledgment muscle. Practice until it’s automatic.

2. Shift from External Validation to Internal Vision

Motivation quickly dies in the absence of clarity. That’s why the high performers in the world live by this question: “Who am I becoming today?” When you define your future identity, and work towards that consistently, the applause of others fades in comparison to the pride of living in alignment with your true values.

So take a moment and write it down:

"The person I’m becoming is…”

3. Set Micro Wins and Celebrate Them Ruthlessly

Big goals are fun and sexy. But motivation is built in the trenches of consistency. Set a 7-day challenge for yourself.  What are the needle moving activities that are going to take you one step closer to your dream? Make each goal small but meaningful:

  • Post one piece of content a day.

  • Reach out to 3 people.

  • Workout every morning at 7am.

Then, when you hit it, reward yourself. Who cares if no one else notices. YOU noticed and that's what really matters the most. Frankly, when it comes to motivation, that's ALL that matters.

4. Anchor Yourself with Good Energy Habits

Here’s a secret that nobody tells you. Most people don’t need more motivation, they need better energy habits.  Oftentimes, your motivation is in the toilet, because you're just burnt out.

Give this a shot today:

  • Set a 50-minute timer while you work. When it goes off, stand up, stretch, move.

  • Schedule a few Pit-Stops into your day and take 10 deep breaths to clear your mind.

  • Drink more water, move more and just smile once in a while! You'll be amazed how quickly you re-engage.

Your body is just like a battery. It needs recharged and protected if you want it to work for you.

I'm definitely not perfect with these routines, but here’s what I've come to know. Some of my biggest breakthroughs have happened in silence. No spotlight. No crowd. Just me, choosing not to quit. I believe the same will happen for you.  When you keep showing up, the world will clap eventually. But by then, you won’t need it. Because you’ll already know who you are and what's most important.  You're the one who clapped first!
