The 3 Productivity Lies You've Been Sold

Jul 23, 2025

What actions can you do each day to feel more progress, purpose and peace?

I would like to set the record straight. If you're anything like most driven people I coach, you’ve been hustling hard, staying busy, and checking off your to-do list like a pro.  But often you still don’t feel like you’re getting ahead.  If this is you, please understand that you’re not lazy.....you’ve just been lied to.

Here are the 3 biggest productivity lies you’ve likely been sold since you were a kid and what to do instead if you actually want to feel progress, purpose, and peace.

Lie #1: Being Busy Means You’re Being Productive

This is definitely not true! Many of us wear our 'Busyness' as a badge of honor. But it's actually a mask for a lack of clarity.

Just because your calendar is full doesn’t mean you’re moving forward. It might just mean you’ve let other people’s priorities hijack your time.

Try this instead: Every morning, ask yourself, “What must I accomplish today to meaningfully progress my life or business?” Not what’s urgent. What’s essential. Focus on the main thing, and don’t let your inbox (or someone else's agenda) dictate your mission.

Lie #2: Multitasking Is a Superpower

Our society has glorified multitasking like it’s the key to unlocking high performance. It’s not.

In reality, multitasking kills your focus and fractures your attention into several pieces. Despite what you may believe, your brain can’t give 100% to two things at once, and every time you switch, you lose momentum and mental energy.

Try this instead: Embrace large blocks of focus time. One task. One timer. One hour. No switching back and forth. Turn off your phone and email notifications, shut the door, and go into a state of deep work. The most productive people set clear boundaries and protect their focus like it’s gold, because it is.

Lie #3: You Just Need Better Tools or Hacks

The world will sell you another app, planner, or AI tool to “fix” your productivity. While many of these tools are great, tools can't ever fix a lack of intention.

Productivity doesn’t come from tech. It comes from clarity. From knowing your priorities, managing your energy, and building habits that align with your long-term mission.

Try this instead: Start with intention. Revisit your goals at least once a week. Schedule recovery like you schedule work. And ask yourself daily, “Am I living today in alignment with who I want to become?” That’s where real productivity starts.

So, if you're one of those people that feel like you simply can't get ahead in life, please understand that productivity isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing what matters most.  You'll achieve your dreams much faster through consistently, focus, and energy.  Stop buying the lies. Start leading your day.
